Looking Homeward

|

I just read the results of a survey of executives who were asked where they spent the most “quality time.” The state of Western civilization notwithstanding, almost half responded by saying “at the office.” And the reason for this? Improved work spaces. Interesting. As recently as a decade ago, to keep employees happy, employers would offer good insurance policies and covered parking. Now workout rooms, employee lounges, gourmet kitchens, and after-hours yoga classes are starting to make the office a pretty great place to be.

All of which goes to show what our editors have known since they fondled their first Fortuny fabric: One’s environment exerts tremendous power.  So much power that a pleasing work space can trump home for some people. I love our staff, and I am passionate about our company, but the office is not where I spend most of my quality time (to wit: I am writing this from a little house in Goa, India). And if designer offices are giving “home” a run for the money, I say let’s vow this fall to get our priorities in order and give our houses a little TLC.

To help you along, we have some wonderful features in this September issue. For starters, how about some fresh inspiration from the Mediterranean? Think French tole tables, Italian linens, and gorgeous Spanish embossed leather. “Mediterranean Magic,” is a dazzling presentation of textiles, tiles, furniture, as well as some fascinating people who hail from the region and now make their homes in Dallas. Regardless of your budget, you will find yourself studying our anecdotal survey of what $1 million will buy you in seven different neighborhoods. We list hot properties for sale and Laura Kostelny interviews some of the city’s top real estate agents (figuring that no one would know better where to find the best houses). In our “Good Neighbors” feature, two neighbors, Cy Barcus and Margaret Ryder, join forces and resources to purchase the lot between them in order to create their own little oasis. Such vision!

I am all for creating a beautiful, expansive work space for our employees, and when I get back from my trip, I will be signing up for D Magazine’s Monday after-hours yoga class. But when our teenage daughter calls to ask “When are you coming home, Mommy?” or a friend calls and wants to know where I have been keeping myself, I know I have momentarily lost sight of what has meaning. Look homeward, dear readers. Enjoy this issue, and let me hear from you.
