Friday

As you may have heard, the State Fair of Texas opens its nearly month-long reign starting today. Things kick off with a parade at noon, and then a nightly closing parade for the duration of the fair. The debate over the annual event forever rages on, but its significance in the city is indisputable. We have a rather lengthy guide covering the first week of the Fair, and will have one for you every week through October 19.

The entire area that includes Deep Ellum, Expo Park, and Fair Park will be especially active this weekend so plan accordingly. Not only is the Fair in town, but there is also Index Fest which begins this afternoon and runs through Sunday night. Over 90 bands will be performing on multiple stages throughout Deep Ellum, and I know this because I heard a guy say this verbatim to his date at Lakewood Landing the other night. He was like a walking press-release. I was very impressed.

Tom Petty will be at the AAC this evening, and obviously the singular classic rocker has a big following here. He has embarrassed himself far less than some of his contemporaries and can still turn out the occasional great song, especially when he writes a downtrodden number.

Saturday

The Rocky Horror Show has a special midnight showing this weekend (on Friday actually, but will play at 2 pm and 8 pm on Saturday) and our theater critic Lindsey Wilson, gave it a very enthusiastic “A.” She calls the show a “raunchy free-for-all” and you can read her read her review by going here.

Before you make your way to the fair, make sure you check out our guide to all of the nearly pornographic amount of fried food that will be available. We have all the details you need on SideDish.

Sunday

A reading of Romeo and Juliet will be performed unabridged at the Winspear on Sunday evening, which sounds like a great way to unwind from a packed and overstimulated weekend. Well, except for that whole double suicide thing at the end, but that may appropriate to your physical state after you eat a fried chicken nugget-cream cheese-vanilla cupcake at the gratuitously aforementioned fair.
